Republican Candidate Doesn’t Hate Puppies

October 31, 2014

On the lighter side, The Week covers the Senate race in Arkansas.

What do you do when you have less than a week to edge out the Democratic incumbent for the Arkansas Senate seat? If you’re Republican candidate Tom Cotton, you come clean in a new ad, finally embracing that most controversial of issues: puppies.

Mark Pryor and Washington insiders will say anything even if it’s false. The next thing you know, they’ll say I hate puppies,” he says while seated next to a freshly shorn Bichon Frise.

Then the truth comes out.

“OK, I’ll admit it took me a little while to warm up to Anna’s dog, Cowboy.” The camera cuts to Cowboy looking doe-eyed at the camera (good dog). “Just joking, Cowboy. I’m Tom Cotton… and I do love puppies.”

(Two hyperlinks added.)

In other news, “Republicans are people, too.”

I love dogs–they’ve got a ton of personality and they love unconditionally. Puppies, on the other hand, not so much. They destroy carpets, they whine like two-year-old children, they’re useless as home security, and they smell awful. All puppies have going for them is cuteness and the fact that they grow into dogs. When I adopt a dog, it will be at least a year old (and housebroken).

I suppose this attitude makes me evil, like all right-wingers except Tom Cotton.

In all seriousness, it seems like a lot of liberals think conservatives are evil to the core. I once heard a liberal acquaintance speculate–apparently without any irony–that conservatives might soften their position on abortion once they learn that abortions are disproportionately sought out by minority women.

Then there was that SNL skit where conservatives jump on board with same-sex marriage as soon as they learn that there’s money to be made off it.
