Statue of Mary Survives Flood, Fire
November 20, 2012
In Queens, there’s a remarkable survivor from Hurricane Sandy, and even the New York Times is talking about it:
It is also, astonishingly, a place of faith. For the one part of the home to survive intact was a statue of the Virgin Mary that Mary McNulty placed in her garden years ago.
The statue is one of the only recognizable remnants of the swath of Breezy Point where more than 100 homes burned to the ground while a flood kept firefighters from reaching it.
See more pictures of the statue and the surrounding devastation (and read more about it and related) from the Wall Street Journal, Inquisitr (two), and St. Peter’s List.
It reminds one of the September 11th World Trade Center Cross.
Perhaps the survival of these symbols amid utter devastation would not, by itself, be enough to convince a person that God is real and Christianity is true. But they sure are striking, aren’t they?
Hat tip to Franciscan Ruminations.

The symbols are something to take note of, no doubt. But what is God actually saying? Is he leaving us a symbol of hope in the wake of devastation? Or is he reminding us that he is the one who wrought the devastation?

I would suggest that He is sending us a message that He is real, that He is ultimately in control, and that He and His kingdom will endure when all the things of this world pass away.

Will you admit thats not the only plausible interpretation?
