Mark Steyn on Benghazi

September 30, 2012

Mark Steyn, as usual, is must-read material.  I recommend his last three weekly columns, about Benghazi and what has happened since.

Did you know that since Benghazi, the Islamists have also destroyed six of our Harrier jets and killed two of our Marines?  (More.)  Neither does anyone else.  See also pro-Obama media bias.

Meanwhile, in Pakistan, the local doctor who fingered bin Laden to the Americans sits in jail.

So the “leader of the free world” and “the most powerful man in the world” (to revive two cobwebbed phrases nobody seems to apply to the president of the United States anymore) is telling the planet that the way to ensure your beliefs command his “respect” is to be willing to burn and bomb and kill.

Even more extraordinary, on September 14, fewer than two-dozen inbred, illiterate goatherds pulled off the biggest single destruction of U.S. airpower since the Tet Offensive in 1968, breaking into Camp Bastion (an unfortunate choice of name) in Afghanistan, killing Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Raible, and blowing up a squadron’s worth of Harriers. And, even though it was the third international humiliation for the United States in as many days, it didn’t even make the papers.

Bonus Steyn quote, from his regular “Happy Warrior” column on the back page of National Review, October 1st issue:

In advanced Western societies spending themselves into oblivion, the political class has looted the future to bribe the present and the electorate has largely gone along with it.  The question for voters now is a very simple one:  Can they get real before it’s over?

That about sums it up.

America may not survive us, but whatever happens, we can’t say we weren’t warned.  Mark Steyn has been sounding the alarm for years.

That story was on the front page of the Times.

  2. Then good point, and I didn’t realize that. (He’s right; here is the article Snoodickle mentioned.) But that’s the only article since 2003 that comes up in a Lexis Nexis search of the Times for the terms harrier w/5 jet! w/5 destroy!. Compare that to the 151 results (including columnists) for a Lexis search of the Times for Romney w/s “47 percent”. (I checked the first 20 manually; all but one were indeed talking about Romney’s secretly taped “47 percent” remarks.) Perhaps that’s why (unlike, say, the Benghazi attack) I have heard almost no one talking about this attack—before reading the Mark Steyn column, I had heard only one person so much as mention it, and I wondered whether he was mistaken.

Really, New York Times? You aren’t even a little bit curious, to follow up with some questions about why we’re losing the war in Afghanistan under President Obama? Is a Romney “gaffe” that much more important than dead Marines and whole jump jets destroyed?

They ran the story on the front page of their newspaper.

P.S. Didn’t President Obama order the troop “surge” that all the hawks wanted him to? It’s time to get out of there.
